Abstract

This study compares and contrasts the Learn Smart Classroom (LSC) model of blended learning for improving academic writing accuracy in English as a foreign language (EFL) for secondary school students in Pakistan's Federal Government Educational Institutions (FGEI) network. Using a mixed-methods concurrent triangulation methodology, the study analyses how digital scaffolds might overcome the limits of rote-based grammar-translation procedures, interlingual L1 transfer, and informal digital shorthand in academic writing. Qualitative/descriptive data from a comprehensive sample of English language teachers (Nₜ=41) with their FGEI campuses was cross-referenced with quantitative data from a cleaned and validated secondary school student sample (Nₛ=276). Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory, and Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis guide the research. Descriptive statistical research shows that lecture-based writing instruction promotes grammatical, lexical, and syntactical errors, while the LSC's digital scaffolding and quick feedback loops greatly minimize writing errors. The considerable mismatch between high self-reported confidence in paragraph writing (M=4.00) and high syntactic and lexical mistakes, backed by educator feedback, prompts the investigation of students' competency. The study found that the LSC model's low-stakes, self-paced, and participatory setting helps overcome this emotional filter. These empirical findings indicate systemic integration, professional teacher training, and local curriculum modification to maintain the formal academic register of writing.
